A trip to Lagos
I enjoyed a trip to Lagos, Portugal, where I explored the scenic clifftop trails, and listened to a live fado performance. A culinary highlight was discovering a local bakery with croissants filled with ovos moles, a sweet egg jam that reminded me of kaya.
I just spent 5 days for a short vacation to Lagos in Portugal. I loved the trails that run along the clifftops and spent a lot of time walking them. The walk out to Ponta da Piedade, with its famous lighthouse, was a definite highlight. The views of the cliffs along the way were impressive - that was a sight to behold.
While I wasn’t much of a sun-seeking fan, I did spend some mornings on the beaches, seeking out the least crowded spots away from the crowds and enjoying some peace and quiet.
One evening, I caught a free live fado performance near the castle walls, right by the marina and the Castelo de Lagos. It felt like an authentic local experience, the singer’s voice was captivating and powerful. That made for an enjoyable way to end the day.
Another evening, I also spent some time on the other side of Ponta da Piedade for the sunset, but it was clear lots of other people had the same idea.
For food, I found this cool local cafeteria/bakery that had croissants stuffed with ‘ovos mole.’ This egg jam strongly reminded me of kaya. It was so good, I went back a second time for breakfast! The place also has an old-school vibe and is always packed with locals. I had tried to buy some ‘ovos mole’ at supermarkets before heading home, but had no luck finding it.
It’s an enjoyable trip, and I’d hope to visit there again.
